Background
Originally just a wirey sorcerer combating whoever challenged him in the colloseum, Shifty became a villain after his familiar was killed by Olio in a match. While death isn't uncommon in the colloseum, this kill was intentional. Shifty may not have treated his rat familair very well, but it was still the only companion he kept. Too mean to others to keep friends, the death if his rat left shifty alone. When Olio was released from prison soon thereafter due to the lack of severity in killing a rat, Shifty became bent on her torturous death.

Story
A mean and lecherous little kid, Shifty rarely had friends or even people that would stand his antics. He was too small to bully people, but late into puberty he discovered his magical talents. He used this skill to scare other kids and push them around. Still too physically small to be a proper bully, he became a target for the larger bullies. This is when, after weeks of study, he acquired his rat familiar. He tried to get something more menacing, like a raven or other intimidating animal but none would have him. This is why the later loss of his only scraggly friend would hurt shifty so.
Despite the rat being his only friend, he often treated it like garbage. Shifty was known for torturing animals and his rat got a unique angle on this form of 'play'. Often times he would send the rat in to bite and harass people who upset him, only to laugh not only at the effect it had on his enemies but how his rat was treated in return. It is likely that the thought of the rat dying never crossed Shifty's mind. Certainly he wouldn't kill it, so how else would it die? When we came to fight in the colloseum he often sent the rat in first to distract enemies while he shot at them from afar. Usually this sorely injured the rat, but Shifty would laugh all the while.
It was a case like this when Olio actually killed his rat, in clear violation of colloseum rules. Olio was arrested for the action, but freed soon there after because few considered the death of a rat a real crime. Despite all the horrible things he did, Shifty never understood why others treated him so badly. This was one of those cases, and while it may have been kharma that his rat died instead of ill will, Shifty saw it as the world once again holding him down and laughing at him like he may have done to so many animals before. He vowed revenge on Olio and sought out whatever would help him.
Already having a liking for the magic of death, he focused exclusively on it for the purposes of making sure Olio came to hate the remainder of her life and her future unlife. During these studies he happened across a city in political turmoil. Seeing his opportunity to swipe people for his 'research' without being noticed he set up operation in the sewers and began abducting people. When a lich named Victor came by later, Shifty began begging for his help in getting his revenge. Normally victor would have swatted him aside, but after hearing his full name Victor decided he might just humor this one.
Now armed with wands, information of the upcoming invasion, and simple orders from Victor, Shifty set out to prepare a reception for the party. Shortly after the army breached the walls, Shifty filled his responsibility to Victor and fireballed the front lines, then ressurected them as zombies. Seeing the party he was hunting among the survivors, he toyed with them and drew them into his sewers. It was there he had his first victory for quite some time. He captured Olio, leaving the rest of the party expecting them to run.
They came back, and after minor skirmishes Shifty captured Raeven and Searil as well. During this time he subjected them to tortures and the like, thinking his stronghold unbeatable with Victor causing havok above. Such overconfidence cost him his victory however. When the party made a rescue attempt, Shifty managed to lock them behind another door only to find the very wall melt into mud. The resulting chase left Shifty in dire condition and all the more bent on revenge. This time though, against everyone.
Psychology
Shifty can be pretty easily summed up as angry, impatient and brooding. He can work for extended periods of time if driven by this anger, but rarely will he ever do anything to better anyone else. Basically, Shifty is a little bully who couldn't face the consequences of her actions and now wants revenge. It is likely this will never subside unless the party dies by his hand or someone elses. With his knowledge of death, he may even try and haunt them in death.
Alignment
Shifty as decidedly neutral evil. His crude and hateful actions with little provocation make him undeniably evil, while his lack of apathy toward who or why things happen make him neutral. He cares little more for humanity than he does for ants, except that humans are more fun to torture.
Relationships
- Mydo Bandydo - This asshole is high on the list. When Shifty had them locked out of his stronghold this one came charging through the mudded wall and hit him with a tanglefoot bag. He's a good fighter too, hacking apart Shifty's zombies faster than they can bludgeon everyone to death. Given the choice, Shifty preffers this one die quicly and hopefully painfully.
- Gnaat Uluchu - What a bothersome woman. She will rush at Shifty and try to wrestle him to the floor. While she may be the first woman to ever want to touch shifty, this certainly isn't anything Shifty ever wanted. Of course, the repeated punches to the face don't help Shifty's image of her. Given a little forethought however, she can be stopped easily enough.
- Searil Gellantara - Goddamn paladins! Who ever said Hieronious was allowed to interfere in this anyways. It isnt like a cleric of Neirul is helping Shifty out so why does Olio get a paladin, much less two! This brute cuts zombies in half easier than cheese, and her smart ass mouth is bound to get her killed by someone. She'll be cut down eventually, and when she does she can spend the rest of her time in service to Neirul, and Hieronious be damned!
- Raiden Nataku - Maybe outfitting zombies with adamantine claws would help against this menace. Brandishing the power of his damnable god and bundled up in layers of steel this menace is almost impossible to take down. His steel can't protect him from Shifty of course, but the zombies are near useless. Well as the saying goes, if you want something done then do it yourself.
- Aeleria Ravenclaw - This treehugger is responsible for melting down that other wall, but fortunately she is an easy target to Shifty's minions. Once captured she can't be a menace, so perhaps once all those annoying fighters are dead and raised again they can eat her alive. Lets see how that treehugger likes being eaten by the very thing she hates.
- Raevyn Darkblood - This one needs to be kept away. Her little daggers are all too pointy and trained. Fortunately she can be taken down quickly. Sicking a few zombies on her will do the trick. Maybe she would make good spare parts in the afterlife.
- Olio Leigh'O - This one will feel all the wrath Shifty has to offer once in his hands, if only he could keep her there. Responsible for the death of his familiar, Olio is the sole target of Shifty's hate. No torture is too much for her, and once she's died a slow and painful death she can live forever as Shifty's undead servant. Hopefully by the time that happens he can make sure soul never leaves his grasp.
- Victor von Pthfonkenhausen - They say liches are horrible people, and after he took those wands away at the fruitful part of Shifty's revenge he might have believed it. Still, Victor gave him the opportunity he needed and offers so much power that to hate him would be foolish. There is no friendship there though.
