Nigh-Oli

Nigh-Oli is the primary divine spirit of the traditional culture of the Western Isles. Nigh-Oli is represented as a dominant, all-infusing spirit with no particular material or conceptual identity, though it is credited with having created the universe.

Nigh-Oli has three aspects, interpreted variously as "forms" or "gods", which keep the universe in balance:

  • Olien: The masculine force of war, construction, civilization, and the sun. He is usually represented as a lithe man with flaming yellow hair and tanned skin, and is shown carrying a sword or horn.
  • Olio: The feminine force of love, music, beauty, the arts, and the moon. She is usually represented as a pale woman with flowing silver hair and blue eyes, and is often shown carrying a harp or staff.
  • Olian: The gender-neutral force of nature, weather, agriculture, and the stars. Olian is usually represented as an androgyn with red or brown hair, grey eyes, and usually carries a branch of oak or a flute.

There is no fixed church heirarchy for the worship of Nigh-Oli or its aspects, though it is revered in general throughout culture in the Western Isles, and it (or one of its aspects) is often evoked before performances or important undertakings to grant good luck.

It is of note that Olidammara, currently worshipped in cities more the east, may possibly be named after Nigh-Oli.
