Backstory

Early Life

Lueali was born in the largest city in Drakenheim to Keribrar and Saelie Myihel. Both of his parents are known as being among the best (if not the best) magicians in Drakenheim; Keribrar specializing in transmutation and enchantments and Saelie specializing in abjuration and divination. As sorcerers themselves, Lueali’s parents were thrilled to learn he had inherited their gift. They sent him to the best tutors in the city to learn the base theory behind magic and taught him the art of sorcery themselves.

Keribrar and Saelie were wonderful parents, but with their reputations and expectations on him, Lueali felt that he needed space to learn on his own. His parents had once been adventurers themselves, so they encouraged this idea, and Lueali left home with his first party at the age of 86.

Apprenticeships and Travel

On his own, Lueali met many other adventurers, though he mostly took interest in the mages. He usually tried to talk to them about their techniques in magic, which confused many sorcerers and annoyed enough wizards that he has since learned a bit of tact. However, his curiosity and happy demeanor earned him more than one apprenticeship with a more powerful magician.

The first of these was with an elven sorcerer by the name of Feradarik Maiyr, then only a bit over two centuries old. Though Lueali had initially impressed Frederick, he was quick to discover that Lue was not quite what he was looking for in an apprentice. Lueali was young for an elf; he spent a lot of his time outside of Frederick’s tower, flirting in bars, and to his master’s horror, actually picking up other boys and sometimes not coming back for a night or two in a row. As time went on it became increasingly clear to Frederick that Lueali was not even remotely interested in learning wizardry so much as casually improving his skills as a sorcerer and spending the rest of his time partying. After only a few short years, the apprenticeship was terminated. Lueali was not particularly hurt by this, as he had come to understand the motivation behind it and agreed that Frederick was far too serious for him at that moment. They parted on decent terms and Lue left for Alizarin in search of excitement in areas unexplored.

Lueali took a few more small apprenticeships and learned much from each of his masters, but eventually came to terms with himself that he was too flighty at this time in his life for apprenticing other mages, and decided to concentrate on himself as an adventurer rather than an apprentice sorcerer.

Lueali the Adventurer

As a young, handsome, talented, and charismatic elven sorcerer, Lueali had no trouble at all coming by parties in need of his skills. He joined up with an adventuring party whenever he got bored of his surroundings, usually following them to the next big town and then staying there flirting in the pubs until he was bored again, when the entire cycle would repeat. His youth and lack of wisdom showed through strongly at this point in his life; more than once he was left by his party for his rakish ways and lack of foresight. Though a part of him would constantly nag him about his behaviour, Lue made a conscious decision to be wild and young, at least for a while, and enjoy it while he could.

At the age of 189, Lueali met a party headed from North Drakenheim to Alizarin. The concept of a long trip with a fairly large party sounded exciting to Lueali and he joined up with them. Along the way, he got to be fairly good friends with the party’s melee fighter, a twenty-two year old human named Arik Thaedis. Shortly before they reached the city, the two of them became lovers. When the rest of the party disbanded, Lueali and Arik stayed together, eventually joining another party and heading out together.

Love, and Love Lost

Arik and Lueali continued as adventurers until Arik died in battle at the age of 34. Lueali paid for his resurrection, and though Arik was grateful and happy to be alive again, he was shocked from the experience and swore off adventuring, saying he was happy to live out his life with his wealth of gold from his time as an adventurer. Lueali promised to stay with him and together they bought a house in the elven district of Radeon. Arik spent his days teaching the city’s children swordplay, Lueali took another apprenticeship, and for a while, they were happy, with life and with one another.

However, Lueali, being young still and an optimist, had forgotten that Arik was not an elf. While Lue stayed young, Arik aged astonishingly fast. Lueali was shocked and saddened by his lover’s aging, after all, he was not even a half-century old, while Lueali was over two hundred. Arik, however, grew bitter and jealous of Lueali, hating himself for his aging body and angry at his lover for his seemingly eternal youth. He began picking fights with Lueali over unimportant things, snapping at comments he made, insulting him for any imperfection. Finally, when Arik was 48 years old, he told Lueali to take his things, leave, and never come back. No amount of pleading seemed to change his mind; Arik had long since fallen out of love. Lueali was left with no other options; he sold most of his possessions, terminated his apprenticeship, and took to the road once again with deep feelings of guilt and a broken heart.

Gain of Power

Lueali did not take another lover for a very long time after leaving Arik. His once carefree one night stands were a thing of the past; whenever he got drunk enough to fall into bed with a stranger, Lue would usually wake from meditation (or worse, a human-like sleep) feeling disgusted with himself and end up running away before his bedmate could wake and see him go.

Instead of relationships, Lueali concentrated on improving his powers as a sorcerer during this time. Pursuit of power took his mind off of Arik, and battle made him forget himself entirely. He travelled with many parties over the next few decades, constantly engaged in some kind of epic battle or deep mystery. This rapid gain of power filled his time so well that one day, Lueali suddenly realized that he was almost 250 years old, and Arik was inevitably long since dead. The realization didn’t hurt nearly as much as he thought it probably should; instead he felt relieved of a huge burden.

After that, Lueali felt happy again, more like himself and less like a soulless monster used for killing other soulless monsters. He was able to eventually take a new lover and then break up on good terms a few years later with few feelings of guilt or nostalgia. He felt that his dedication to the art of sorcery had finally taken priority over his sex life, and accepted this fact, seeing his old thoughtless ways as a childish habit he was happy to break. Though he still flirted with nearly everyone and occasionally took new lovers, Lueali was concentrated on improving his skills as a mage first and foremost.

Also somewhere in here, Tegaki happens. I don't know how this goes so it gets skimmed over! He finds his ACTUAL wun twu wuv, who is a drow by the name of Drea'oth Baenre. They do NOT part on good terms and Lue doesn't see him again for years. Also he meets Masrae!

Fall from Greatness

At over three hundred years of age, Lueali had become a formidable sorcerer, knowledgeable and skilled in the arcane arts. His name spread, as all great adventurer’s names do, through bards and other mages. He travelled with many great parties, destroyed many evil creatures, completed many quests, and recovered quite a lot of treasure. Lueali was proud of his accomplishments and skills; he felt that he had finally come into himself as an adult. He could look back to Arik as a fond memory, though he was wiser now and avoided taking human lovers, knowing that their time together would end in pain.

At the age of 316, Lueali was recruited along with several other extremely powerful individuals for a very specific quest. They were sent to destroy what was rumoured as a powerful band of undead that was systematically destroying each town they came to. The party set out in high spirits, but walked into a well-organized trap. The “band of undead” turned out to be a huge amount of very strong vampires. Most of the party lost their lives in the ensuing battle, leaving only the cleric, the rogue, and Lueali. Greatly weakened, they returned to town to bandage their own metaphorical wounds. The cleric went immediately to the church to pray for resurrection of the dead party members, the rogue swore never to adventure again and disappeared into the town, and Lueali was left alone, badly injured and weakened. A few days later he was able to confirm what he had most feared: he had lost most of his powers in the fight, victim to a vampire’s energy drain.

Lueali spent a full year trying to find a way to recover his lost power, but it was in vain. Frustrated and helpless, Lueali decided to head to the west, hoping that a change of scenery would help his mood while learning things he had already learned a century ago.

At the moment, Lueali is dealing with the frustrating loss of a lot of his abilities. He refuses to let loss of power break him and is struggling with himself to maintain his old optimism in the face of what he considers an overwhelming disaster.

Lueali never stays in one place for very long and has never bothered with a familiar, thinking it cruel to tote an animal around with no home.

Role in Party

Lueali has never stuck with a party for very long, but always has served as the main magic-user, usually travelling with a party of heavy fighters and clerics. He can perform both attack and utility magic and considers himself a well-rounded adventurer. He also has a very nice dagger, though he rarely uses it as a blade.

As a charismatic sorcerer, Lueali occasionally ends up being the diplomatic "face" of the party, though in most situations he prefers to let someone else do the talking unless the situation becomes very desperate. In battle he serves as the party firepower, with many offensive spells, and outside of battle he does fairly well with tactical spells such as Teleport and Knock.

Psychology

Lueali is a very confident and happy person. Over three hundred years of life he has learned to enjoy himself and savour things such as meeting new people and seeing new places, knowing that if he continues to travel for the rest of his life as he has thus far, he will reach a point where he has literally been everywhere and seen everything. He is not immune to the elvish superiority complex, but prefers to bless as many people with his presence as possible rather than turn his nose up at potentially interesting people or allies. He loves other sun elves above anyone else, but values all the elven races (almost) equally. He pities half-elves but is interested by their unique perspective. He loves the flighty nature of humans, the innate strength and wisdom of dwarves, the trickiness of halflings, the clever magic and pranks of gnomes, and even the thrilling power of half-orcs.

Though the loss of his power is devastating to Lueali, he is trying his best to remain optimistic about his situation. He will not bring up his past to other adventurers, since he sees no point in talking about things that upset him. Instead he is trying to think of it as an opportunity to correct mistakes he made in his youth and become a better person and magician because of it. However, he quietly hopes that he will be able to regain his power quickly enough that he will never have to be humiliated about being only as powerful as someone a third his age. This has become less of an issue to him recently, as his strength is returning quickly.

Recent events have pushed Lueali to all but abandon this optimistic face as a near-facade, however. For the first time he has felt his age and become embarrassed by his actions, feeling that he is living as he did when he was centuries younger. The need to be accepted by his current party has driven much of this mental switch in him, resulting in a desire to present himself in a more subdued manner. The unfamiliarity of this role makes Lueali very uncomfortable and almost shy, but he prefers this over the embarrassment he feels after making a scene of himself, as he was inclined to not so far back in the past.

Lueali is not sexually promiscuous, though he sees nothing wrong with occasionally picking someone up (or being picked up) in a bar for a night, so long as it isn’t every night. He is a little picky about who he will sleep with, his quiet elven racism marks half-orcs and "the small races" as untouchable, and naturally, he prefers other elves over half-elves or humans. In addition to his racism, Lueali is uninterested in women, and though he tends to flirt with anyone who pays him attention, will often end up, at the end of the night, apologizing for his gender, sexual preference, or both. Lueali believes strongly in love, though not in each person having a "one true love." In his mind he has been "in love" many times, though he has rarely stayed with a single partner for more than a decade. Lueali does not see himself ever entering a long and steady relationship due to his flighty nature and apparent inability to stay in one place for more than a few years, though if one were to develop, he would happily allow and encourage it.

Lueali also is a vain person, though usually in a subdued sort of way. He considers hygiene to be as essential to life as food and water, and will go out of his way to keep his hair and robes clean and neat. He is happy with and proud of his physical appearance, which gives him quite a lot of confidence usually, but any small thing wrong with his face, hair, or robes will annoy him until he is able to correct it.

Alignment

Lueali is Neutral Good. He likes bending rules but will try not to break them, and he believes everyone is good, deep down in their hearts, somewhere. He does understand that creatures such as zombies are inherently evil and he feels little guilt for destroying such things. Generally, though, Lueali tries not to attack unless he is attacked or feels very threatened by something. His guilty secret is his ability to hide his dagger with his ring and sneak it into situations that won’t allow weapons, but he usually justifies it to himself that he won’t use it unless absolutely required.

Religion

Like most sun elves, Lueali worships Corellon Larethian. Religion is a casual thing for Lueali; he knows the truth in his religion, but his relationship with his deity is minimal. Lueali rarely prays or worships Corellon in any way, usually only when he is particularly troubled or happy, or on major holy days. Lueali holds a great respect for very religious people like Flora, but he cannot see himself ever acting that way.

Relationships

    • Myself - It would be quite the understatement to call myself disoriented. My emotions are a bit of a mess right now; while I'm happy for our success and the world, I can't help but feel that it would have been better for me to just stay dead. I don't think I'll be adventuring any more.
    • Arik Thaedis - Just an old lover who had his face stolen by a monster recently. Old memories are painful, but there is enough good to help me forget the bad.
    • Drea - I gave up a lot for him... I don't remember the exact words of Corellon, but before I die, I must either break this bond, or find a way to redeem him. It's selfish, I suppose, but I won't spend eternity with this feeling.
    • Medea - She was turned back to her old form, both herself and her companion animal. That must have been a hard decision, to give up the elven lifespan... but it was important to her to stay true to herself, which is very honourable. She's an amazing woman and I wish her the best in her life.
    • Rayn - Oh... we never saw him in the Citadel. I hope he's alright.
    • Lightning Tiger Fire Swan - He's incredibly skilled to become so powerful at so young an age. He's matured a lot since when I first met him.
    • Tigersaurus the monkey - This thing was never much around, really...
    • Khae - Back to his normal form, and apparently he had some kind of memory loss that was restored by... by a false god. Khae is not his name, from what I gather, but the name of someone else, and he simply took it as his own? I'm a little confused about him, but he sounds like he has direction now.
    • Flora - I'd love to see her again.
    • Siân - Like Lightning Tiger, she seems to have calmed down and gained a sort of guiding force in her life. She's been a great asset to us.
    • Kate - Haha... she turns out to be straight? What a strange culture she comes from. Anyway, she has completely turned herself around. She cares very much for her sister, as well! I'm glad things are working out for her.
    • Araxin - Still a little cold and quiet, but very intelligent. I'm glad to have worked with him.
    • Murich - He reminds me a little of Araxin, actually. He takes his work very seriously.
    • Hardrick the Paladin - He was dead, oh no, I had no idea. He won't answer the resurrection, he must be content where he is.
    • Illiustrae - I... am disgusted. She fooled everyone, myself included. I don't like saying so, but she is better off as she is now... for the sake of this world.
    • Harris - ...
    • Baklavar - Was he resurrected? The poor man has had a hard time.
    • Olio Leigh'O - I'm very glad to see her alive and well. I don't know if I really desire to join her on this new mission, but I sort of feel it is my obligation...

Current Events

I'm very disoriented right now, but it appears that we have succeeded in stopping Illiustrae (I am not bothering with her true name). I think I'm in shock, I can't really process all this so quickly. I met Corellon... my memories are hazy but I spoke with him about Drea. Ugh... I still dream of him nearly every night. Corellon has given me much to think on in regards to him, and my life in general. I want to see my parents again very badly, it's been a long time, but Olio has something very important she wants our help with... I need to help her, but after that... I think I'm done. I'll... I don't know. I could try wizardry again, I suppose, but, I don't know.

I should be happier now, we are so fortunate.

Kate: Are you a man?

Lue: ... yes.

Kate: Are you sure?

Kate: Are you REALLY sure?

Lue: ... ... ... you've never seen an elf before, have you?

Lue: sometimes.
