Fremont

Fremont is a medium-sized mountain town in eastern Alizarin. It is primarily home to people offering goods and services to mountain-bound travelers.

Geography

Layout

Fremont is a loose town without a wall or paved streets, and consists mostly of one- or two-story houses placed in various arrangements throughout the town. One of the largest structures in town is the Temple of St. Cuthbert, which is nonetheless rather small compared to its big-city counterparts. On top of a hill on the edge of town lies the dwelling of the wizard Yreko Redding.

Landscape

The landscape around the town is very mountainous. The town itself lies in a small moraine valley between two peaks, and many people in the town much appreciate the grand views and great natural beauty this area accomodates its residents.

Climate

The climate of Fremont consists of mild, sunny summers, very cool and rainy autumn and spring, and cold, frequently snowy winters. Due to its mountain setting, however, the town's weather is unpredictable and may change at random at any time.

History

Several hundred years ago, a sudden rush to procure gold, silver and gems from a certain mountain chain in the southern reaches of the Old Empire occured. These areas, amazingly, were relatively untouched and unclaimed by dwarves, goblins, kobolds, trolls, or other burrowing races. Thus, rumors of "free mountains" in which anyone could go to get precious minerals fired up, and a steady rush of people to this region occured over the next several years. This region's name soon became "free mount," and eventually "Fremont."

Boomtowns popped up all over the map, many nameless, and business exploded. However, it was demonstrated within a few years that the rumors were largely unfounded, and business dried up as people evacuated and left for the fertile lower valleys. Many townsfolk who stayed in the mountains moved to a certain boomtown. This particular boomtown was situated in the middle of a frequently-traveled pass, allowing it to continue on in a state of "business as usual." This area, being the last remaining town in the Fremont region, consequentially adopted the name as its own.

Rumor has it that the name "free mount" could also refer to the town's reputation as a primo flesh shoppe during the boom years.
