Backstory
Devis was born to Elsa Rivers, a human, and her elvish consort and lover, Darien Freyalise. Elsa died while birthing him, and Darien, feeling responsible for taking care of Devis, took him under his wing. Darien taught Devis all he had to know about surviving in the woods and living by his wits. He also instructed him in the ways of elvish music and magic.
Despite being a good guide and teacher, Darien was always emotionally distant with his son, possibly because he was ashamed of his human heritage. This impacted Devis greatly, since Devis therefore felt no strong bond with his father and left him to live in the outskirts of several cities. He lived by thieving and playing for coin, later on taking on various mercenary jobs. After several years as a sellsword, Devis decided to return to life in the open country and see the world, living by playing music for traveling folk and serving as a guide.
During this time, Devis took on a pupil, Olio Leigh'O, who was the first person to ever admire him as a person, rather than a fighter and musician. This had a profound impact on his personality, and he has since become somewhat warmer. It did not, however, change his wanderlust one bit, and after saying his goodbyes to Olio he went back to wandering the countryside and seeking adventure.
Role in Party
Devis has never been a dedicated "member" of a party. The only combat companionship he's known has been as a mercenary, and it's his firm policy that he never enters a group of people with more experience than him. This ensures that he won't have to rely on others to pull him out of danger, and that he can fill any roll required of him. Thus, he functions as a supporter, melee fighter, ranged attacker, or stealth combatant equally well.
In combat, Devis prefers to open fire with his longbow, perhaps tainted with some of his Drow poison if he has a specific intention of disabling the person, or if he is facing multiple enemies. He will usually rely on his trusty longsword and buckler in combat situations, or resort to using his rapier and daggar combination (or longsword and rapier) in situations where he is fighting one foe and doesn't needed the added protection of his buckler. He'll use magic sparingly and as needed to disable or confuse his opponent. He'll also take every opportunity possible to use his sneak attack ability.
Psychology
Devis is emotionally distant and has no particular connection to anyone. This is caused by the fact that in early life, the only person he knew was his father, who had no emotional connection to him. Devis thus developed very little empathy for other people. On the other hand, this lends him and balanced view, and he doesn't tend toward malice or vice.
Perhaps the only person Devis is emotionally close to is Olio Leigh'O, a woman whom he took on as his apprentice when she was a teenager. Olio was the first person to show genuine emotional attachment to Devis, as opposed to attachment born of admiration for his musical and combative prowess. This made him feel a little closer to her and inspired him to teach her the musical and magical arts his father had taught him. When it came time to part ways, he was able to say goodbye with a smile.
Alignment
Devis is neutral. He feels no overridingly powerful emotions for anything and feels no urge to be particularly truthful or deceptive. He performs his actions based on what seems like the best idea at the time, with little consideration for any abstract morality.
Due to his interaction with Olio, Devis has shifted slightly toward neutral good, though he presently he doesn't have the philosophical and active dedication to be considered truly good.
Relationships
Devis' makes no effort to forge strong relationships with people, but makes no effort to keep his distance, either. He simply feels no compulsion towards people in general.
- Olio: He wonders what she's up to occasionally, since they parted ways in Juno.
- Dresven: May have met him at some point or another.
- Duffe Mcweighlyn: Met him when he was in Juno last.
- Victor von Pthfonkenhausen: Fears this rumored lich for his powers, but doesn't believe he'll be encountering him any time soon.
