Backstory
Arinae was born in a tiny moon elf village, Lirilen, to Isil Galanodel, a cleric of Sehanine Moonbow. Isil, an intelligent but somewhat simple woman, had not bothered to tell anyone up to this point that her child's father was a drow that seduced her in the forest. Isil refuses to say the name of Arinae's father, and it's possible even she does not know it. Her church forgave her, but the rest of the village still thinks Isil is a bit mad.
As a child, Arinae, of course, never really fit in. After a while of attempting to make friends and be "normal," she basically gave up and spent her time playing in the forest instead. She found several lengths of chain in the trees and quickly learned to climb using them. To her mother's disgust, she took to carrying them around and playing dexterity games with herself whenever she was bored, which was almost always. Once Ariane got old enough to have her own gold (or old enough to know where her mother kept it), she bought more and more chains until a good size bit of forest outside the village had chains looping around it in a complex system allowing her to fly from tree to tree. Eventually (at a MUCH older age) she heard about chains that could be used as weapons, and immediately ran to the human village nearby to persuade the weapon shop to make her some. Instead of learning sword, bow, and staff with the other elves, Arinae took her chains into the forest and taught herself to fight.
When Arinae came of age at 110, she decided that she needed to "know more about herself" as an adult... or at least that's what she told Isil in her letter. While Isil was at the temple, Arinae gathered her chains, makeshift leather armour, stole all the gold in the house and enough supplies for a long journey, and fled Lirilen. She travelled far away, hiding under an enormous cloak and dark scarf, and found a shop in a city near Juno's northern border that could sell her a disguise ring to change her skintone from her natural drow-like gray to the normal white of moon elves. In her now-perfect disguise, she continued travel south, eventually ending in what she heard was the biggest city around, Juno.
In her travels, Arinae quickly ran into the problem of not knowing the common speech. As an outcast in her village, no one had bothered to teach her to talk, fearing her communicating with outsiders. Likewise, as a child Arinae had no interest in learning anything the elves were interested in; indeed she only picked up elven by proximity, not effort, and Sylvan in the same manner, from spending so much time in the forest, around the faeries. Once she had left home, Arinae realized that common speech was necessary when it had not been in the past, and put a concentrated effort into learning to speak to humans in their tongue. After two years of travel, she knows enough to call herself "fluent," but as she unfortunately picked the language up primarily in bars and inns, her vocabulary is lacking and her choice of words is quite vulgar for an elf. She doesn't like to admit this fault, and will instead pretend to understand words she does not, hoping that she will figure out the meaning in context later on.
At the moment Arinae is intending to find something to do with herself for the rest of her life, as she was bored in the moon elf village. She has a very large interest in drow in general, but is too embarrassed to admit it, and does not want to arouse suspicion.
Role in Party
Arinae is the party blinktank. She charges headfirst into battle, dealing damage and drawing attention but rarely taking a hit. She relies heavily on her dexterity for survival; it only takes one good hit to take her effectively out of fight. She is a good distraction if nothing else, and is also fair at sneaking about, particularly favouring hiding in trees to perform the infamous "death from above" move. She often plays the devil's advocate, and she has no annoying morals keeping her from killing anything that gets in her way.
Psychology
Arinae is strong, independent, and cold. She has a sardonic and dry sense of humour that insults most people. She prefers the impulsiveness of humans to the floaty superiority of elves she is accustomed to, but she is very much a hypocrite in this opinion. Though she does not identify as being a moon elf, Arinae considers herself, as a drow, to be above not only all the other "lesser" races, but the other elf subraces as well. She keeps this opinion mostly to herself, but can show through as a haughtiness at times. Arinae also suffers from chihuahua syndrome: She is small and slender with a high pitched little voice but sees herself as being this enormous powerful thing that she really is not.
In her village, Arinae had no secrets. She never bothered to lie because the village was so small that everyone would know the truth in a matter of days anyway. Since leaving her village, Arinae has learned to rely very heavily on a number of carefully placed lies to get what she wants without alarming her companions. However, she still has a bad habit of being "too" honest when she gets comfortable, and this can lead to awkward situations for her. She sees her spurts of honesty as a flaw and is trying to correct it.
Arinae is completely asexual, at least for now. She has never had a crush or felt desire for a lover, and frankly cannot think of anyone who would have her, if only for the horribly mixed-up children they would produce. She's a little unnerved by certain members of the party implying that her chains are some kind of weird sexual tool, which she cannot really understand. Since she did not learn about sex until recently, her view on it is still of a disgusted child. She does not really care to change this perspective, since her focus lies entirely on drow, chains, and fighting.
Arinae doesn't desire very much out of the world, but what she does want she obsesses over furiously--the kyton necklace Juliette had, Undercommon, keeping her chains clean and in good condition. This produces a sort of sudden and frightening shift between uncaring and distant to wide-eyed obsessive intensity. In the back of her mind she realizes she should try to disguise this interest, but caught in the moment of desire she has trouble controlling herself. Arinae's chains are sort of the epitome of this; she sees her chains as a weapon of immense power and beauty, complicated enough that she has rarely met another who can also wield them. She can spend hours at a time simply toying with a length of chain, to learn the way it moves and feels in her hands, yet she cannot seem to listen to some party members talk for more than a minute without getting bored enough to start making rude comments or trying to change the subject to something more interesting. Recently she has become more aware of her one-mindedness, but has taken steps to fuel rather than suppress it.
As a child, Arinae was afraid of spiders, though after learning how much Drow like them, she embraced her fear, liking the metaphor of herself as a spider, her chains as her web, and the dangerous feel she got from this. As a child she was rarely called by her name, with the elves in the village usually referring to her as "spider," "demon," "drow," or occasionally, "the drow." This has very much carried over into her adult life; Arinae identifies herself as a demon, drow, and spider much more than a moon elf, woman, or fighter.
Alignment
Arinae is Chaotic Evil. She is out for herself, and though she doesn't necessarily wish harm on others, she feels mostly that everyone is (or should be) out for themselves as well, and if they get hurt then it is their own damn fault. At home, quiet respect for her mother kept Arinae mostly in line, but having left her home, her mother, and her god, Arinae's new life encourages and even rewards her behaviour.
Religion
Arinae grew up in a very religious situation, with her mother a cleric of the moon elf god, Sehanine Moonbow. Arinae never really thought about worship of Sehanine until she left home and was exposed to other religions. At this point she began to realize that the goddess of moon elves probably does not consider a half-drow abomination to be worth her time. Arinae abandoned her goddess--assuming that Sehanine had not already abandoned her--and for a period of time had no god at all. However, having been used to religion being so prevalent in her life, she felt awkward with no god and seeked out knowledge of the drow pantheon. She quickly chose Vhaeraun, god of drow power on the surface, as her patron deity, and though she was originally not certain Vhaeraun, being primarily the god of drow males, evil surface drow, and thievery, would accept her as a worshipper, her immediate success after taking him as her god has more than proven his acceptance to her. In her research, Arinae learned a small amount about the other drow gods, particularly Lloth, and though she feels more aligned to Vhaeraun with her plans and desires, Arinae respects the Spider Queen highly. She is interested in many aspects of Lloth, such as her worshippers' respect for spiders and the belief that drow--particularly female drow--are more or less better than everyone else.
Relationships
Arinae is a very independent person who likes to block herself off from most everyone. The only person she has any sort of bond with is her mother, and tends to have an observer/subject sort of relationship with everyone around her.
- Me - There's drow in this world and I'm going to find them. And then... Um. Well, I don't know. I'm sure they do lots of cool things like beat the shit out of people.
- Isil - I think I let her die. Shit.
- Olio - I don't think she wants to talk to me any more. Whatever.
- Mydo - Haha... loser.
- Gnaat - I didn't say good bye to her but that's probably for the best because I bet she woulda tried to stop me or something.
- Searil - So is she dead or not?!??
- Raiden - Fucker! If we meet again I'm not gonna go easy on him!
- Aeleria - Who knows.
- Knucklebirdy Noodle - Did Scharr ress him? I wasn't paying attention.
- Raevynn - She ran off somewhere, I don't know.
- Allerance - Dead twice.
- Scharr - Scharr was really cool but I guess he's doing some shit with Heironious now for WHATEVER reason. Raiden got him brainwashed or some shit. Oh well. He ressed me so I gave him my ring. It'd be cool to see him again if he doesn't become a stupid Heironious pussy.
- Alistin - I saw her finally, but she sucks.
- Dresvan - He'd better hope I never get the chance to see him again... I'll kick his ass.
- Princess Elistrae - Princess of nothing now.
- Shifty McGee - Dead?
- Duffe McWeighlyn - This guy got fucked over pretty bad.
- Frederick Meyer - Well, he's good for something.
- Tedrick Gotfreid - I hope he died.
- Sir Lawrence - I hope he died painfully.
- Dame Helga - Dead also.
- Victor von Pthfonkenhausen - THAT WAS MY KILL GNAAT I HATE YOU.
- El Moron-Ass - Hahahaha she is soooo dead.
Current Events
So the last century of my life was a lie, that's pretty cool. It's not like there was anything in that world for me, anyway, there's drow in the real world. I bet I was the only one in the old place... I wonder where the hell my father came from, and where he went to? Maybe he's dead. Maybe I'll find him. Anyway, I'm done being a moon elf... Arinae died with that world, and only Masrae lives on!
Fuck the Heroes of Juno, we're the Destroyers of Worlds. Hahaha!
